September 09, 2002

Helen E. Sanzone, an accountant and Orioles fan, died Friday of complications from cancer at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Perry Hall resident was 74.

Born Helen Joyce, she graduated from Patterson High School and worked for more than 30 years for Steele and Co., an East Baltimore construction supply outlet, until it went out of business in 1982.

She immediately took a job with the Maryland Department of the Environment and worked there as an administrative assistant until her retirement last summer.

An avid traveler who enjoyed taking bus tours and Caribbean cruises, she met tour-bus driver Joseph J. Sanzone on a day trip in 1963. The couple soon married and set up house in Perry Hall.

They recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Sanzone was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She was also a longtime Orioles fan.

"Even when they played like dirt, she followed the O's every day during the season," said her stepdaughter, Sherree Woolford of Baltimore. "She was loyal as they come."

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4815 Hamilton Ave., Baltimore.

Mrs. Sanzone is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Scherer of Rosedale and June Zinkand of Baltimore; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Her stepson, Joseph M. Sanzone, died last year.
