Brooklyn Park fire sends 7 to hospital

September 05, 2002

Seven occupants, including two young children, were taken to area hospitals last night as a fire heavily damaged a two-story apartment house in Brooklyn Park, authorities said.

Crews from five county fire companies and one station in Baltimore responded to the blaze, which was reported at 8:59 p.m. in the 5200 block of Ballman Ave.

Those taken to hospitals included two boys, 4 years and 10 weeks, and their mother. Capt. Lee Cornwell, a county fire spokesman, said they had minor burns or smoke inhalation.

Raymond Atkinson, who lives across the street from the burning house, said he was alerted to the fire by his dog's barking. "Thick smoke was coming out of the windows," he said.
