Rev. John Addington, 84, Baptist pastor, tailor

The Rev. John Addington, assistant pastor at City Temple of Baltimore Baptist Church, died of pneumonia Sunday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Baltimore. He was 84.

Mr. Addington, who lived in the Memorial Apartments in Bolton Hill, was born and raised in Memphis, Tenn. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army and served in Europe during and immediately after World War II.

He moved to Baltimore in 1949, and for many years was a tailor at the old Blum's department store. He also was the owner of an upholstery business.

FOR THE RECORD - An obituary published yesterday for the Rev. John Addington included an incorrect date for the funeral. It will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at City Temple of Baltimore Baptist Church, 317 Dolphin St. The Sun regrets the error.

Ho took theological training at United Baptist College and Seminary in Baltimore, and was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1972.

His pastoral posts included serving as interim minister at New Psalmist Baptist Church and Fulton Baptist Church. He had been a member of City Temple since 1970, and at his death was its assistant pastor.

"The main thing in his life was helping people. That's what he loved to do. He liked working in the church and in the community," said his wife of 49 years, the former Hazel F. Butler.

Mr. Addington was a member of the American Legion's Walter Green Post 14 and Dorie Miller Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a former vice commander of the Maryland Department of the American Legion.

He also was a member of the Masons' John A. Holmes Lodge No. 89.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at City Temple, 317 Dolphin St.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Addington is survived by a grandson and a great-granddaughter. His daughter, Ella Marie Calhoun, died last year.
