Explanation of right to refuse release of student data

The Howard County public school system has occasion to disclose information about students for public information purposes. The information, classified as "directory information," includes a student's name, address, telephone, number, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received and the most recent previous institution attended.

In accordance with Maryland law, the school system will not disclose students' addresses or phone numbers without permission from a parent or guardian, except to the PTA Council of Howard County or a local school unit, or any authorized booster club affiliated with a Howard County public high school; an organization of students or former students that is recognized or approved by the school system; a branch of the U.S. armed forces; or any Maryland community college.

Photographs of students involved in school activities may also be published.

Parents and students ages 18 or older have the right to refuse the release of any or all of these categories of information and can refuse to permit the use of photographs in which the student is identifiable.

Those who wish to exercise this right must notify the Howard County public school system by Sept. 30. Requests should be sent in writing to Public Information Office, Howard County Public School System, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City, 21042.
