The student: Alexandra Taylor, 13

School: Burleigh Manor Middle

Special achievement: Winner of the Ben Carson Scholars Fund Award. The award is for youths who have at least a 3.75 grade-point average and participate in community service.

What the award is: The $1,000 scholarship is invested for college. "It's for students who want to go past college and really make a difference," Alexandra said.

What is some of her community service work?: "One of my friends has cancer," she said. "I'm involved with a team that's raising money for Relay for Life American Cancer Society." In June, they walked the athletic track at Howard Community College.

What she wrote for her application essays: "One was about community service I do. I'm involved with Locks of Love. I grow my hair out and [have it cut to] donate it to that foundation, and they make it into a wig for people who have cancer."
