Rangers update

Just when it appeared the Rangers were putting a little respectability into their season, they get swept at home by Tampa Bay. Ouch. You can bet there will be plenty of debate about Alex Rodriguez's candidacy for American League Most Valuable Player. He's on a last-place team, but he has been phenomenal. Rodriguez batted .339 in August, with 12 homers and 27 RBIs in 27 games. A-Rod is leading the majors with 48 homers and 120 RBIs. He needs two more homers to become the fifth player in major-league history with consecutive 50-homer seasons. Ivan Rodriguez is 9-for-17 with three homers and seven RBIs in his past four games. The Orioles took two of three from the Rangers in Arlington in early July but were swept there last week. Texas can expect to face Sidney Ponson tomorrow, though it's not official. (Rangers statistics, 6c)
