WHEATON - Mount St. Joseph's football players proved they were in better physical condition than Good Counsel's last night, but that wasn't enough to earn a win in the opener for both schools.

Five Falcons went down with cramps in the second half. Nevertheless, the Gaels doomed themselves with a variety of miscues in a 35-21 loss before an estimated 2,000 at Good Counsel.

Mount St. Joe senior quarterback Nick Tanis, who led the state as a junior in passing yards (2,342) and touchdown passes (36), completed 20 of 33 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. But he also threw an interception on his second pass of the game that was returned 40 yards for a touchdown by Good Counsel cornerback Billy Rhea.

That was the first of several mistakes by the Gaels.

Mount St. Joe was penalized 10 times for 80 yards, it had a touchdown nullified by an illegal motion penalty after perfectly executing a hook-and-lateral on fourth-and-18 from the Good Counsel 19 in the third quarter, and senior running back Keon Lattimore (12 carries, 44 yards, one touchdown) was tackled for a 2-yard loss on a fake punt on fourth-and-three at the Good Counsel 38 late in the first half.

"We just couldn't get anything going," Tanis said. "Every time we got something going, a mistake happened or a penalty or something - just mistakes that we do to ourselves. If we correct them, we'll be a good team."

Defensively, Mount St. Joe allowed a 64-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Reginald Gooch to senior wide receiver Ryan Bowman on a flea flicker in the fourth quarter just 32 seconds after Lattimore had barreled over two defenders from 3 yards out to bring the Gaels to within 21-14.

Mount St. Joe closed to 28-21 with 5:20 to play on an 8-yard touchdown from Tanis to junior wide receiver James Roberts.

"We've just got to correct the long plays on defense," Mount St. Joe coach Mike Working said.
