Hospital plans health screenings for next month

North Arundel Hospital will be offering the following screenings and educational exhibits next month at its Arundel Mills storefront, between Jillian's and mall entrance No. 4:

Sept. 3, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., blood pressure screening.

Sept. 4, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., foot screening.

Sept. 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., blood pressure screening.

Sept. 6, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., neck and shoulder massage; and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., computerized neck and back screening.

Sept. 9, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., blood pressure screening.

Sept. 10, 9 a.m. to noon, blood pressure screening.

Sept. 11, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., information on colon cancer; 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., cholesterol screening; 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., foot screening; and 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., glaucoma screening.

Sept. 12, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., back screening, and 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., discussion on diabetes.

Sept. 16, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the county Department of Aging will offer information about its services and answer questions.

Sept. 17, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., blood pressure screening.

Sept. 18, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., foot screening; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., blood pressure screening.

Sept., 19, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., blood pressure and lung capacity screening; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., blood pressure screening only.

Sept. 23, 8 :30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., blood pressure screening.

Sept. 24, 8 a.m. to noon, prostate screening.

Sept. 25, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., foot screening.

Sept. 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., information on laser vision correction surgery; and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., a job fair (visitors may complete applications for current and future openings).

Pediatrics group to give student-athlete physicals

Nighttime Pediatrics North will offer sports physicals to area student athletes seven days a week (and after 5 p.m., when most physicians' offices are closed). Appointments are required.

Nighttime Pediatrics North is in Festival at Pasadena shopping center, Jumpers Hole Road and Ritchie Highway.

Red Cross schedules classes in first aid, CPR

Courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid have been scheduled for next month at several sites in Anne Arundel County by the Red Cross of Central Maryland.

They include:

"Adult CPR," teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for victims age 8 and older. It is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at Edgewater Red Cross, 3475 Pike Ridge Road; 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 10, Edgewater Red Cross; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 21, Edgewater Red Cross; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 28 at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Blvd. The cost is $35.

"Community CPR," teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for adults, children and infants. It will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at Edgewater Red Cross. The cost is $40.

"First Aid Basics," training participants to identify and tend to victims of illness or injury. They will learn to control bleeding, minimize effects of shock and care for musculoskeletal injuries. This course does not include adult CPR. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at Severna Park United Methodist Church. The cost is $35.

"Standard First Aid," teaching rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and one-rescuer CPR on victims age 8 and older. The course also teaches treatment of severe bleeding, burns, musculoskeletal injuries, shock and sudden illness. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Edgewater Red Cross, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 at Severna Park United Methodist Church. The cost is $40.

"Infant and Child CPR," teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and CPR for children from birth to age 8. The classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 at St. Philips Episcopal Church, 730 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at Severna Park United Methodist Church. The cost is $35.

"Infant and Child CPR and First Aid," including infant and child CPR certification and emphasizing first aid for those who work in child care settings. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 7 at St. Philips Episcopal Church and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at Severna Park United Methodist Church. The cost is $40.

"Crime Avoidance Training," interactive training that focuses on empowering individuals to take responsibility for their safety. The class, organized around a typical day, covers security awareness, tough-target strategies, safety on the move, using an ATM and responding to threatening situations. Instructors will come to a facility, group or organization at a time that is convenient for the group. A minimum of 10 people is required.
