Ruth Anne Etzel, 71, insurance underwriter

Ruth Anne Etzel, a retired insurance underwriter and homemaker, died of multiple sclerosis Aug. 20 at her Severna Park home. She was 71.

Mrs. Etzel, born and raised Ruth Anne Mannion on Cecil Avenue in Baltimore, was a graduate of St. Paul's Commercial School.

In 1948, she began working for her father, who owned Joseph G. Mannion Insurance Co. in Baltimore. She was a vice president of the company when she left in 1953 to raise her family.

In 1951, she married George E. Etzel, owner of Etzel Insurance Agency in Glen Burnie, who survives her. She was an underwriter for her husband from 1980 until 1988, when she retired.

Mrs. Etzel had been a member of the Mother's Club of Mount St. Joseph High School in Irvington. She enjoyed vacationing at her Ocean City home and flounder fishing.

She was a longtime communicant and member of the Sodality of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Severna Park, where a Mass of Christian burial was offered Saturday.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Mark E. Etzel of Severna Park; a sister, Mary Rose Hoffman of Arnold; and two granddaughters.
