Attitude: The New Subversive Political Cartoonists, edited by Ted Rall (Nantier, Beall, Minoustchine, 128 pages, $13.95).

This is a compilation of the work of 21 cartoonists primarily being published in alternative city weekly newspapers, accompanied by very readable interviews of each of the artists. This is not the highest level of cartooning -- but it makes up for it with a lot with energy. A lot of the work is too word-filled, and, even taking intentional visual spoofing into account, some of the drawing leaves draftsmanship to be yearned for. But there is moral rage, drama and righteousness that are both breezy and mortally serious. This is provocative, if often still rough and immature, stuff. And if history is still a guide, many of these artists will emerge as the best of the next generation of mainstream newspaper cartoonists.
