Civic Association board to meet Tuesday

The North Laurel Civic Association will hold an executive board meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Savage library meeting room.

The agenda includes the status of county capital projects (drainage, sidewalks, noise abatement walls and parks) in the North Laurel community. Information: 301-725-7521.

Near-death studies group plans to meet Aug. 31

The International Association of Near Death Studies of Maryland will meet from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Building 1, APL Drive, Main Cafeteria, 11100 Johns Hopkins Road, North Laurel.

Participants at the meeting, which is free and is open to the public, will share information and near-death experiences.

Parks bureau to sponsor senior center pizza party

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a Fabulous Pizza Festivity for those ages 55 and older from 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 25 at Savage Senior Center, 9525 Durness Lane.

Participants should dress in 1950s attire. Entertainment will be provided.

The cost is $20. Advance registration is required.

Promotion: Marine Lance Cpl. Luis U. Martinez, son of Amanda Nieto of Laurel and Luis A. Martinez of La Puente, Calif., was promoted to his current rank while serving with the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Luau, watermelon: The Laurel Department of Parks and Recreation will sponsor a Hawaiian luau at 7 p.m. today at Phelps Senior Center, 701 Montgomery St., Laurel. The event will feature the band Arrow. Tickets are $11.50. The center will also sponsor its eighth Watermelon Fest at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday. Into nature: Patuxent Research Refuge will offer several free programs at the North Tract on Route 198. "Terrific Trees" will be held from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10. Children ages 5 to 7 will learn the importance of trees to animals and the Earth in an interactive program. A bird walk for all ages will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sept. 15. Take binoculars.
