WHILE THEIR kids are savoring the last hours of summer vacation, parent volunteers from Bodkin Elementary PTA are making final preparations for a race and fun run fund-raiser scheduled for Oct. 12.

The one-mile walk or fun run, geared to attract Bodkin pupils, will begin race-day activities at 8 a.m. The five-kilometer race will start at 8:30 a.m.

Now in its sixth year, the 5K run and one-mile fun run have become popular events, drawing supporters and participants from throughout the county. Judy Bonn, co-chairwoman of the event, said that besides attracting local support for the fund-raiser, many avid runners return year after year to participate in the race.

"We have several runners who can't wait to find out the date of our event," Bonn said. "We don't offer big awards to the winners, so they obviously must enjoy the family atmosphere of our race."

To encourage school participation, the PTA waives entry fees for Bodkin Elementary pupils who sign up and collect at least $15 in sponsor pledges. Pledge sheets are due Oct. 9. Prizes will be awarded to the three pupils who raise the most money.

The nonrefundable entry fee for adults and for pupils who do not attend Bodkin is $12 in advance. Advance entries must be postmarked by Oct. 4. The entry fee after that will be $15.

Participants can also sign up for the race online at www.active.com.

Race-day entries will be accepted from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

The 5K course will begin at the school, 8320 Ventnor Road, and pass through several communities around the Pasadena school.

The first 300 entrants will receive a free T-shirt. Awards will be presented to the top male and female 5K finishers in seven age groups. Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the event. Winners must be present to collect prizes.

No wheelchairs, strollers, inline skates, bicycles or pets will be permitted in the race.

Packets for those registering in advance can be picked up from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 11 in the school gym.

"We're hoping that the community will come out and support this year's race," Bonn said. "It's a lot of work for us, but it's a fun day for everyone who participates."

Bonn is sharing race-coordinating duties this year with Mary Beth Benson.
