Birthday party for `Constellation'

BEST BETS

August 22, 2002|By Lori Sears

The USS Constellation is celebrating its 148th birthday, and you're invited to the party. Saturday, visitors to the ship will see naval drills and demonstrations performed by the Ship's Company and crew, watch hourly cannon firings, hear a steel-drum band play and learn about the ship's restoration.

You can try your hand at knot-tying, necklace-making (with a signal flag) and constructing a square-rigger. There'll also be sailor games, maritime challenges and a chance to chat with the ship's crew members.

Kids under 15 who bring a handmade birthday card will receive free admission to the ship, if accompanied by a paying adult.

Event runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the USS Constellation, Pier 1, Inner Harbor. Some events are along the pier and are free. Ship admission: $6.50; $5 seniors; $3.50 ages 6-14; free for ages 5 and under. Call 410-539-1797.
