Democratic Club sets forum tomorrow at senior center

Carroll County Democratic Club will hold a forum for Democratic candidates at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Westminster Senior Center.

The forum is open to the public.

The senior center is at 125 Stoner Ave.

Tourism calendar seeks events for 2003 listing

The Carroll County Tourism Office is preparing the 2003 Tourism Calendar of Events.

The calendar will cover activities from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. The Tourism Office will print and distribute 100,000 copies. There is no charge to be included in the booklet.

Organizations are invited to submit information on tourism-related events. To be included, events must be sponsored by a Carroll County organization, be tourism-related and must draw at least 300 people.

Application forms are available from the Tourism Office and must be turned in by Sept. 17. Those indicating that a facility is handicapped accessible must meet the American Disabilities Act requirements.

Most Beautiful People nominations still open

The nomination deadline for the 16th annual Maryland's Most Beautiful People volunteer awards has been extended to Aug. 30.

Each county and Baltimore is responsible for soliciting local nominations, honoring them and selecting one to represent the jurisdiction at a state ceremony in Annapolis in November.

Nomination forms are available at the Department of Citizen Services, 10 Distillery Drive, Westminster. Completed forms must be turned in before the extended deadline.

Community Foundation grant applications open

The Community Foundation of Carroll County Inc. announces that applications for fall grants are being accepted.

Grants will be made next month and in November. Carroll County agencies or charities should send a letter requesting a grant.

Letters should describe the agency's or charity's work, purpose of the request and the amount requested. Verification of tax-exempt status should be included.

Applications should be sent to the Community Foundation of Carroll County Inc., Audrey S. Cimino, executive director, 10 Distillery Drive, P.O. Box 170, Westminster 21158.

Farm Museum fetes efforts of volunteers

The Carroll County Farm Museum's staff and Board of Governors recently honored their volunteers.

The farm museum has 260 active volunteers, with a total of 6,323 hours donated by adult and student volunteers last year. The top 10 volunteers gave a total of 2,716 hours.

Pins were presented to volunteers who had reached a number of hours in volunteered goals.

Elmer Harshbarger was awarded a 3,000-hour pin, and Sarah Zentcraft was presented a 2,500-hour pin.

Pins for 500 hours of service were awarded to Bill Myers, Bernice Armetta, Gerry Gottlick, Karen Datillio, John Carbaugh, Bob Frederick and Robert Thomas. Bill Clements, Debbie Leister and Julie Mathias earned 125-hour pins.

Michael "Bud" Leister, the museum's volunteer tinsmith, died last year. His 2,000-hour pin will be presented to his grandson, Matthew, who will inherit his grandfather's tinsmith tools.
