Arthur G. Green Jr., 79, claims manager, attorney

Arthur Gerrish "Gerry" Green Jr., a retired senior claims manager and attorney for Maryland Casualty Co., died from complications of a stroke Thursday at Wellspring Retirement Community in Greensboro, N.C. He was 79.

The former Towson resident, who had lived in Greensboro since 1999, was senior claims manager and attorney for Maryland Casualty at its headquarters on 40th Street for 35 years until retiring in 1988.

Mr. Green was born and reared in Beaumont, Texas. After graduation from high school, he earned his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Texas.

His professional memberships included the state bar associations of Texas, Missouri, Louisiana and Maryland.

During World War II, he served in the Army and was discharged at war's end with the rank of sergeant.

He was married in the 1940s to the former Marilyn Owens, who died in 1989.

He was a "Texas barbecue king," said family members.

Mr. Green was also an avid golfer and dancer. He was a longtime member of the Towson Elks.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 31 at the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 E. Padonia Road in Timonium.

Mr. Green is survived by three sons, Arthur Gerrish Green III and William Green, both of Greensboro, and Christopher Green of Conyers, Ga.; two daughters, Susan Dumont of Timonium and Nancy Volpitta of Monkton; a sister, Laura Lee Hickang of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
