Howard County schools will be awash in new faces this fall, including many assistant principals, three principals and a director of elementary schools.

Thunder Hill Elementary, Murray Hill Middle and Lime Kiln Middle schools will be under new leadership when classes resume Aug. 26.

Carolyn Jameson was assistant principal at Murray Hill but has taken over the top job at the Laurel middle school. Jameson, who lives in Columbia, has been working in Howard County schools for 24 years. From the last five, when she was Murray Hill's assistant principal, Jameson said she learned the benefits of the school's successful after-school program, which serves more than 300 of the 560 students three days a week.

"I want to continue to concentrate on that," Jameson said. "There's a big emphasis on students who need extra help in reading, writing and math. It shows that learning continues not just in the 6 1/2 -hour day, but also to 5 or 6 in the evening."

She said she also wants to focus on the school's mentoring programs for teachers who are new to the county or to Murray Hill.

"We want to look at giving teachers tools," Jameson said.

Thunder Hill Elementary School children will be under the new leadership of former Pointers Run Assistant Principal Cindy Hankin this year.

"My challenge is to take the strengths of the school -- and there are so many of them -- and build on those," said Hankin, who has been working in Howard County for 11 years.

Hankin said it will be a welcome challenge to transfer the skills she learned at Clarksville's Pointers Run, which has more than 1,000 pupils, to Columbia's Thunder Hill, which has fewer than 400.

"The pace of life here is a little bit slower, and I appreciate that," Hankin said. "But Pointers Run was a wonderful experience for me. I have so many wonderful things that I can take from the larger model and apply it to the smaller model."

Before working at Pointers Run, Hankin was assistant principal at Hammond Elementary School for three years. She also taught at St. John's Lane and Fulton elementary schools.

Patrick Saunderson, who was assistant principal at Wilde Lake High School, will be the new principal at Lime Kiln Middle School in Fulton. Saunderson has been working in Howard schools since 1992. He was chairman of the social studies and athletic departments at Atholton High School for seven years before moving to Wilde Lake, where he was assistant principal for four years.

He said he hopes to improve on the budding relationship among Lime Kiln Middle, the community and the other schools on campus -- Fulton Elementary and Reservoir High.

Last week, Superintendent John R. O'Rourke also appointed a new director of elementary schools -- a former Prince George's County principal, Michael Martirano.

Martirano said he is ready to tackle the county's biggest challenge -- accelerating student achievement, particularly in the lowest-performing schools.

"That was my main attraction to the position," said Martirano, who was principal at Laurel High School, "because we want to make sure we're dealing with all children."

In struggling Prince George's, Martirano said he was used to schools with many needy students.

"So I'm excited to work in those schools with those principals," he said.

When school starts Aug. 26, there will be many other new assistant principals as well. They are:
