An elderly Towson woman was killed and her husband was critically injured when the car he was driving collided with two other vehicles at an intersection near the Baltimore Beltway, in one of two fatal crashes in the metropolitan counties yesterday.

The husband, John E. Rowe, 80, of the 700 block of Thornwood Court, was turning left from the southbound lanes of Dulaney Valley Road onto Hampton Estate Lane shortly before 11 a.m. when his 1994 Buick Regal collided with a northbound 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Marilyn Lenhart, 34, of Frederick, said Sgt. Chuck Hart, of the Baltimore County Police Department's crash-investigation team.

Rowe's car then struck a second northbound vehicle, a 1993 Acura Integra driven by Michael Coleman of the 8700 block of Littlewood Road near Towson, Hart said.

Killed in the crash was Sophie Maxwell Rowe, 83, who was pronounced dead at the scene. John Rowe was reported in critical condition last night at Sinai Hospital.

Neither of the other drivers was hurt, Hart said, adding that the crash remained under investigation.

The other fatality occurred last night in Harford County when a pickup truck crashed into a tractor-trailer rig on Philadelphia Road in Belcamp, state police reported.

The victim - a Harford resident whose name was not released - was eastbound on Philadelphia Road shortly after 9 p.m. He had crossed the crest of a hill near the former Bata Shoe Co. building when he struck the underside of the trailer of a rig about to turn west onto Philadelphia Road from the Riverside Business Park with a load of seat cushions, said Lt. Bud Frank, a state police spokesman.

Speed on the part of the victim may have contributed to the accident, which remained under investigation by a state police crash team, Frank said.
