Howard businesses are to take part in American Heart Walk

Howard County companies and businesses will participate in the American Heart Walk on Oct. 12 at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Symphony Woods, Columbia.

Local sponsors include Patuxent Publications, Allfirst-Central Maryland Market (which will organize company walking teams), Howard County General Hospital, Amerix Corp., W.R. Grace Foundation, ADVO Inc., Comcast Cablevision of Howard County and Abrams Development Group.

The 3K walk will begin in the morning. Other events will include testimonies from heart disease survivors, a Wall of Valor, honoring local residents affected by heart disease and stroke, an invigorating exercise warm-up demonstration and games for children.

In its ninth year, the American Heart Walk is an American Heart Association event held in more than 850 locations nationwide that has raised more than $216 million. This year's goal is $75 million, to be raised by more than 650,000 participants across the country.

Small-business accounting service being offered

The Financial Systems Group, LTD of Columbia, 10440 Little Patuxent Parkway, offers a small-business accounting management consulting service, "Controllers and Accountants On-Call," to businesses in the area.

The program provides small to medium businesses with immediate, flexible access to finance, accounting and information technology. Businesses are charged hourly fees, and the work is performed on site. Records and documents never leave the premises.

Accounting and management services and capabilities include income tax preparation and planning, inventory control, on-site accounting and bookkeeping, manufacturing software implementation, employee software training and computerized accounting systems implementation.

Williamsburg Group earns master builder certification

Williamsburg Group LLC of Columbia has earned the honor of Certified Master Builder from the Home Builders Association of Maryland.

Membership in the Certified Master Builder program requires participants to abide by specific standards and practices.

Middle Eastern music: Yoga Center of Columbia, 8950 Route 108, Suite 109, will sponsor a live concert of Middle Eastern music by the group Bija from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 14.
