Ruth W. Jarrell, 84, city school dietitian

Ruth W. Jarrell, a retired Baltimore public school dietitian, died of respiratory failure Thursday at Genesis Eldercare Loch Raven Center. She was 84.

The longtime Towson resident was born Ruth Wegman in Chicago and moved to Baltimore with her family as a young girl. After graduating from high school, she earned her bachelor's degree in nutrition from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

She worked for many years as a dietitian for the Baltimore public schools, retiring in the 1980s.

Mrs. Jarrell was a longtime member of Babcock Memorial Presbyterian and Loch Raven Presbyterian churches, where she was active in the Women's Association and Bible study groups, and taught Sunday school for more than 30 years.

She enjoyed reading and was an accomplished needleworker.

Services were held yesterday in Chestertown.

Mrs. Jarrell is survived by her husband of 50 years, William F. Jarrell Jr., a retired real estate agent; a stepson, William F. Jarrell III of Crystal River, Fla.; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
