Phelps Senior Center plans information sessions

The Phelps Senior Center, 701 Montgomery St., Laurel, will offer two free sessions this month.

Gann Partnership will sponsor "Learn to Protect Your Life Savings" at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Topics will include Medicare and Medicaid laws and an analysis of using one's assets vs. long-term care insurance.

Triad Salt, sponsored by Seniors and Law Enforcement and Sheriff Alonzo Black, will be offered at 11 a.m. Aug. 20. Black will speak about emergency (911) cellular telephone service, while the staff will demonstrate how the system works.

Patuxent refuge to offer guided walk Sunday

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Patuxent Research Refuge at the North Tract, on Route 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32, will offer "Wildflower Wander," a guided walk for ages 16 and older from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The National Wildlife Visitor Center, Powder Mill Road, Laurel, will offer a Nature Tots Series for children ages 3 and 4. At "Nature Tots: Flutter Friends," preschoolers will discover the world of butterflies from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Luau, watermelon festival are scheduled this month

The Laurel Department of Parks and Recreation will sponsor two events this month at the Phelps Senior Center, 701 Montgomery St., Laurel.

A Hawaiian luau will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 23. The event will feature the band Arrow. Tickets are $11.50. If purchased by Sunday, tickets are $9.50.

The center will also sponsor its eighth Watermelon Fest at 12:15 p.m. Aug. 27. Watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew and other summer produce will be served. The cost is $1.

Reports for duty: Navy Petty Officer 3rd class Fredericka M. Mendez-Lopez, daughter of Leonadis A. Rameriz of Laurel and Ruth V. Mendez-Lopez of Baltimore, has reported for duty.

Reports for duty: Marine Pfc. Luis U. Martinez, son of Amanda Nicto of Laurel and Luis A. Martinez of La Puente, Calif., has reported for duty with the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is a 2001 graduate of Laurel High School.
