BREWERS: Announced resignation of pitching coach Dave Stewart. Named bullpen coach Bill Castro pitching coach for rest of season. Sent C Raul Casanova and P Nick Neugebauer to Triple-A Indianapolis to rehabilitate injuries.

DODGERS: Recalled P Victor Alvarez from Triple-A Las Vegas.

GIANTS: Optioned OF Tony Torcato to Triple-A Fresno.

INDIANS: Placed former Orioles P Chad Paronto on 15-day DL with tendinitis in right elbow. Added P Terry Mulholland to roster.

ORIOLES: Placed P Jason Johnson on 15-day DL, retroactive to July 23, with tendinitis of right elbow. Recalled P John Stephens from Triple-A Rochester.

PHILLIES: Traded 3B Scott Rolen and P Doug Nickel to Cardinals for IF Placido Polanco, P Bud Smith and former Orioles P Mike Timlin.

RANGERS: Released P Dave Burba and will pay remainder of his $2 million salary, which comes to $688,524. Recalled P Joaquin Benoit from Triple-A Oklahoma.

RED SOX: Activated P Alan Embree.

TIGERS: Activated 3B Chris Truby. Optioned P Erik Sabel to Triple-A Toledo.

WHITE SOX: Traded C Sandy Alomar to Rockies for minor-league P Enemencio Pacheco and agreed to pay remainder of Alomar's $2.5 million salary, $860,655.

BERKSHIRE (INDEPENDENT): Released former Orioles OF Curtis Goodwin.
