Corey Brigham, University of Maryland golf team star, whipped the rest of the field by eight shots, and Billy Wingerd, outstanding local publinx player, survived a playoff at steamy Bonnie View Country Club yesterday to claim one of two additional spots in qualifying for the 102nd U.S. Amateur Championship.

Brigham, 22, All-Atlantic Coast Conference and Middle Atlantic District Player of the Year from Rumson, N.J., produced 11 birdies in two trips over the 6,248-yard, par-70 course, finishing with 7-under-par 66-67-133.

Wingerd, Chris Davidson, from Ellicott City, and Ted Coon, of the University of Maryland Golf Club, tied at 141. Coon earned his spot with a par at No. 1, and Wingerd, who missed a 4-foot par putt there, two-putted No. 5 for par at the second playoff hole. Davidson, a senior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, was relegated to first alternate.

It will be the first Amateur for all three qualifiers, although Wingerd has been to the U.S. Juniors and the U.S. Amateur Public Links. The championship will be held Aug. 19-25 at Oakland Hills CC in suburban Detroit.

Brigham said he had been struggling lately, playing tournaments in six successive weeks.

He carried his own bag as yesterday's heat index reached 110 and other players used caddies, but his plan was simple: "I wanted to be sure I kept the ball in play, play conservatively and not do anything stupid."
