Man charged in beating death of brother, 37

ABERDEEN - Aberdeen police have charged a local man with first-degree murder in the beating death of his brother early yesterday.

David Omar Sconion, 38, of the 400 block of Oak St. is charged in the death of Lloyd Dwight Sconion, 37, of the same address, police said.

Lloyd Sconion was found lying unconscious on Cornell Street, near his home, at 12:37 a.m. Authorities took him to Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2 a.m., police said.

The two brothers had apparently been fighting, said police.

David Sconion is being held at the Bel Air Detention Center, pending a bail hearing, said Sgt. Stephen Smith of the Aberdeen Police Department.

Ex-Florida legislator dies when plane hits mountain

CLEAR SPRING - A former Florida legislator died yesterday when his single-engine plane crashed into the side of Fairview Mountain, state police said.

Authorities said Roy L. Hess, 71, of Pensacola, Fla., was flying alone in the Beechcraft plane when it crashed shortly after 11:30 a.m. near Clear Spring, about 80 miles west of Baltimore. Hess had served as a Democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1968 to 1972.

Authorities said Hess began his flight in Florida and stopped briefly yesterday morning at Hagerstown Regional Airport before continuing toward Chattanooga, Tenn. Shortly before the crash, Hess notified the Hagerstown airport that he was returning because of inclement weather and limited visibility, police said.

In Baltimore County

Search planned by family, friends of missing woman

HALETHORPE - Family and friends of Michelle Lee Rust, a Halethorpe woman who has been missing since July 20, will coordinate a search of the community today in hopes of finding clues to her disappearance.

Volunteers are asked to gather at 9 a.m. at the Halethorpe Community Church, 1312 Francis Ave., where they will be organized into groups. Rust, whose 25th birthday is today, has not been seen since she left her home on Clark Boulevard at 9:30 a.m. July 20 to shop for her son's birthday party.

Rust is white, 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds and has red hair. Police have termed Rust's disappearance suspicious and continue to investigate.
