Going into last night, the Red Sox had lost two straight to last-place Tampa Bay after striking for 22 runs in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader, which included three homers and eight RBIs from shortstop Nomar Garciaparra. Jason Varitek was batting .406 during a nine-game hitting streak. Closer Ugueth Urbina has been struggling, with three blown save chances in his past five appearances before last night. He helped to squander a four-run lead in the ninth inning of Tuesday's nightcap by serving up a homer to Jared Sandberg. Lowe tossed seven shutout innings before the bullpen imploded. In an April 5 game against the Orioles, Lowe carried a no-hit bid into the eighth before Tony Batista reached on an infield hit. The Orioles are 3-6 against Boston this season, losing two of three at Fenway Park from April 29 to May 1. At least they won't face Pedro Martinez, who has beaten them three times this year.
