Library board selects Francis as administrator

The Anne Arundel County Library's Board of Trustees announced yesterday the appointment of Marion W. Francis as library administrator.

Francis, who has worked for 24 years in public library service, was most recently executive director of the Jackson/Hinds Library System in Mississippi.

Before her tenure in Jackson, she served as head librarian at the Memphis/Shelby County Public Library and Information Center in Tennessee.

She will begin work in Maryland in October.

Sobriety checkpoint for Rowe Boulevard

A sobriety checkpoint will be conducted tonight on Rowe Boulevard between Taylor Avenue and Farragut Road, county police have announced.

Officers from the Annapolis Police Department, Maryland State Police and the Maryland Department of General Services will begin checking drivers at 11 p.m. The checkpoint will end at 3 a.m.

Tonight's checkpoint is the 24th. Previous checkpoints have resulted in a total of 223 arrests for drunken driving and 53 arrests for drug possession.

Fire Department names seven for promotions

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department announced yesterday the promotion of seven department members last week.

John S. Thompson and Julian E. Jones were promoted to battalion chief.

Harry J. Steiner and Michael E. Cox were promoted to captain.

Russell Hallock, David E. Price and Francis J. Callard were promoted to lieutenant.

A formal ceremony will be held Aug. 28 at the department's training academy in Millersville.
