2 massage parlors on U.S. 1 shut down by the authorities

Two massage parlors along U.S. 1 were closed yesterday for breaking unspecified state and local laws, authorities announced yesterday.

Howard County police, along with officials from the county office of licensing and the fire department, inspected three massage parlors along the road and said they found violations at the Lotus Shiatsu, in the 7800 block of U.S. 1 in Jessup, and the Oriental Spa, in the 6300 block of U.S. 1 in Elkridge.

Both were closed immediately.

No violations were found at a third massage parlor, authorities said.

Howard police reported the shutdowns, but officials could not be reached to describe the alleged violations.

Emergency radio system passes an early test

Howard County's new emergency radio system has passed an early stage of testing by broadcasting effectively over 95 percent of the county, authorities have announced.

Some county employees spent last month testing the hand-held radios in homes and locations throughout the county. The radios are part of a $26.6 million system designed to upgrade police, fire and other rescue workers' radio communication, which has been hampered by blind spots.

The new radios will undergo further testing next month and are expected to go into use during the fall, county officials said.
