There aren't many restaurant choices in Glenelg, but that's not the reason you would choose M.D.'s Country Pub. The tasty and extensive food selections make this an easy selection for a relaxed meal.

Owner Michael Duffy established M.D.'s in 1990 and oversees the daily operation. Duffy says the restaurant's motto, "Fine Dining in a Casual Atmosphere," aptly describes the restaurant.

At the end of a small strip mall, M.D.'s large oak entry door sets the stage for the pub's interior. The restaurant opens into a bar that incorporates several televisions, Keno and video games. Next to the bar, the small dining room combines oak trim, decorative glass panels, and green tablecloths and ceiling to create a casual ambiance. The service is friendly and informal.

Three homemade soups, M.D.'s crab, cream of crab and Cajun black bean with smoked sausage, are on the menu, along with a daily special. Appetizers include Spudmania (fried potato chunks served with dressing and toppings), wings and a combo plate (mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers and jalapeno poppers). Also available are Chef Dan's specialties: buffalo shrimp, cheddar crab and artichoke dip or clams casino.

From M.D.'s Famous Breasts and Burgers selection, customers can create their own sandwich. Choose a charbroiled boneless, skinless chicken breast or a lean ground beef patty and add one of six topping combinations.

The restaurant also serves crab, tuna and shrimp melts, and baskets of ribs, shrimp and chicken fingers.

Seven salads are offered. Garden, chef's and Greek salads provide traditional fare, while the seasoned shrimp, tuna and two chicken salads add more interest as a light meal.

Among M.D.'s sandwiches are a broiled or fried crab cake sandwich, grilled filet mignon, M.D.'s BLT, grilled cheese and bacon, or Rueben.

Dinner entrees include two side dishes and are grouped into blackened or charbroiled specialties, barbecued specialties, seafood specialties and pasta.

Popular entree selections include filet mignon, a 10-ounce center cut filet topped with bearnaise; baby-back ribs with a tangy sweet sauce; and a seafood combo of a crab cake, fried shrimp and the catch of the day.

Children can chose from burgers, spaghetti, fried shrimp, chicken nuggets and mozzarella sticks ($3.25 to $5.25).

In addition to the regular menu items, MD's offers some nightly specials: on Tuesdays, patrons can dine on 1 1/4 -pound whole Maine lobster; Wednesdays are rib and steamed crab night, when in season; and Thursdays is prime rib.

Duffy also owns and operates M.D.'s Family Restaurant a few doors down from M.D.'s Country Pub.

M.D.'s Country Pub dining room accepts reservations and is open for lunch and dinner. It offers the full menu for carry-out orders and provides catering for weddings, office parties or other occasions.
