Volunteers needed to teach activities in Laurel, Annapolis

The county Department of Aging, Senior Nutrition Program is seeking volunteers from the Maryland City/Laurel area to teach these activities: low- impact aerobics, armchair exercise, yoga, line dancing, genealogy, crafts and crocheting.

The department also needs volunteers from the Annapolis area for crafts and line dancing. Juanita Adams at 410-222-4464, Ext. 3053.

Trips to Dover Downs, Shawnee Inn planned

Pasadena Senior Center Tour Committee has several trips on its agenda.

They include:

Visit to the Red Roost Inn in White Haven on the Eastern Shore on Aug. 22. Cost is $54 and includes baskets of chicken, fried clam strips, fried shrimp, Maryland steamed crabs, hush puppies and corn on the cob. Sing-along entertainment will be provided by the Back Fin Banjo Band. Depart at 9:15 a.m. and return about 6:30 p.m.

Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pa., Oct. 8. Cost of $70 includes trip to the Shawnee Inn and Octoberfest in the resort village in the Poconos. A continental breakfast will be served family-style. The day also will feature a two-hour open bar of wine, soda and beer; an early buffet dinner in the theme of the day; and bingo. Depart from the center at 6:45 a.m. and return at 8 p.m.

Newsletter gives advice on online health resources

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health offers tips on finding reliable health resources on the Internet in the latest edition of its newsletter, Learn to Live at Fifty Plus.

Individual and bulk copies of the free newsletter can be requested by calling the department's Learn to Live Line at 410-222-7979.

Senior center offering two diverse programs

South County Senior Center has these events scheduled this month:

"Bereavement: Working Through It," an informal discussion group with Norma Crane for ages 55 and older, meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Meetings are free.

A six-week program for grandparents and grandchildren sponsored by Anne Arundel Community College is under way. The program, which runs until Aug. 12, features weekly activities, including music, cooking, art and a nature trip. Registration is required. The cost is $60, or $12 a day.

Insurance discussion: Susan Knight will present information on buying long-term care insurance at 1 p.m. today at Pasadena Senior Center. 410-222- 0030.

Bazaar workshop: Annapolis Senior Center will hold a holiday bazaar workshop with Evelyn Bacon from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. tomorrow. The center is in Eastport Shopping Center, 1027 Bay Ridge Ave. 410-222-1818.

IDs for seniors: Maryland Transit Administration officials will be available at the South County Senior Center to take photos and issue MTA photo IDs to people age 65 and older beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. Seniors who no longer drive can get photo identification cards at the free event. The center is at 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater. 410-222-1927.

Arundel Mills trip: Brooklyn Park Senior Center will offer a trip to Arundel Mills mall at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 5. Signup is requested. 410-222-6847.

Picnic: Brooklyn Park Senior Center will hold a picnic featuring snowballs at noon Aug. 8 at the center. 410-222-6847.

Blood pressure screening: Brooklyn Park Senior Center will offer free blood pressure screenings from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 14 and 22 at the center. 410-222-6847.

Hearing screening: Free hearing screenings will be available beginning at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 14 at Brooklyn Park Senior Center. A representative from Beltone Hearing will be available to answer questions. Please sign up for 10-minute slots. 410-222-6847.

Senior volleyball: South County Senior Center will offer "Co-Ed Volleyball" for seniors 55 and older from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. beginning Aug. 22. 410-798-4802.

Hearing loss talk: Ingrid Gladwell, a hearing specialist from Beltone Hearing, will show a video on hearing loss at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at South County Senior Center. Gladwell also will answer questions. Registration is requested. 410-798-4802.

Colon cancer program: Brenda Gallagher, a nurse-case manager, will discuss colon and rectal cancer at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 at Brooklyn Park Senior Center. 410-222-6847.

Trips: Annapolis Senior Center, 1027 Bay Ridge Ave., has released its trip schedule. Trips include: Red Roost crab feast, Aug. 13; Sight and Sound Dinner Theater, Sept. 11; Western Maryland train trip, Oct. 22; Dutch Apple Dinner Theater, Nov. 7; and Christmas in Williamsburg, Dec. 3 to 5. 410-222-1818.

Cravate for Care: Anne Arundel Senior Services Provider Group will hold its annual fund-raiser, Cravate for Care, at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Naval Academy Officers and Faculty Club. The group recently distributed proceeds from last year's event to three nonprofit organizations serving seniors in Anne Arundel County. The organizations were Meals on Wheels, Partners in Care and Hospice of the Chesapeake. Ann Shelton, 301- 805-8422.
