Your beat-up purse mirror that you bought years ago at the drugstore as a simple aid for applying lipstick in the car is about to have some fancy competition. Smythson's of Bond Street, an English company known primarily for its fine stationery and leather goods, is introducing its version of a compact mirror.

It's actually two round mirrors of varying magnifications in colored pigskin leather. Besides being easy to hold, it folds into a stand -- freeing hands for easier viewing and make-up application. One never knew a mobile mirror could be so chic.

It's available in two sizes (3 1/2 inches and 5 1/2 inches) and a variety of colors: red, pale blue, tan and black. The mirrors range in price from $110 to $130 and can be purchased at Smythson's in New York, 4 W. 57th St. For more information or to buy, call 877-SMYTHSON.

Bye-bye, beach hair

Keeping your hair looking good is a challenge during the summer, especially if you are spending a lot of time around the pool or at the beach. John Frieda is here to help.

This summer he has added three new products to his "Beach Blonde" collection: Cool Dip Shampoo, Smooth Sailing Conditioner and Kelp Help (a deep conditioning hair masque). The Cool Dip shampoo clears away chlorine, sand, salt and oils and is said to contain an anti-humidity / anti-frizz formula.

The detangling conditioner includes spearmint and aloe vera -- two perfect ingredients for fighting the sun and heat. The masque offers heavy-duty hair conditioning with the help of a wheat protein complex, kelp extract, aloe vera and vitamin E. Each costs $6.50 and is available at drugstores nationwide or mass market retailers.

Shell game

Banana Republic offers the perfect accompaniment to warm- weather dressing this summer: mother-of-pearl accessories.

They're great with tank tops, T-shirts and jeans as well as with this season's more feminine and floaty looks. Our favorite is the big mother-of-pearl disk on a skinny leather cord for $38. If necklaces aren't your thing, try the big disk earrings for $24, the disk belt for $48 or the flat shell button sandals in brown, blue, black and chalk for $68.

Available at Banana Republic stores nationwide.

Bright eyes, eye surprise

When one thinks of colored mascara, the first thing that probably comes to mind is "theater" or "costume." Surprise! M.A.C Cosmetics has taken the idea of colorful lashes and turned it into a wearable product for those of us who choose not to pursue acting as a livelihood.

The new line, called Pro Lash Colour ($9.50), is available in seven flowery shades: Tiger Lily (orange), Periwink-Wink (iris blue), Boston Fern (blue-green), Twisted Tulip (plum red-black), Prim Rosy (hot pink with a hint of blue), Ivy Envy (olive with a touch of gold shimmer), and Hocus Crocus (blend of blue, purple and red). Ivy Envy is great for blonds with light eyes.

Available at all M.A.C locations and www.maccosmetics.com starting this month.
