Blue Jays update
The Orioles haven't played Toronto all season, so that means 19 of the final 71 games will come against the Blue Jays, including nine of the next 19. Toronto has had a disappointing season and recently unloaded right fielder Raul Mondesi to the Yankees. But the Blue Jays are trying to retool under first-year general manager J.P. Ricciardi and new manager Carlos Tosca. Toronto won three straight against Boston last weekend. Rookie third baseman Eric Hinske, who came from Oakland in the Billy Koch trade, had two home runs Sunday, including the game-winner off Red Sox closer Ugueth Urbina in the bottom of the ninth. Hinske, who is batting .291 with 16 home runs and 51 RBIs, is probably the favorite for American League Rookie of the Year honors. But Orioles pitcher Rodrigo Lopez (9-3 with a 3.09 ERA) is making a strong case for himself, as well. (Blue Jays statistics, Page 6d)
