The student: Michael Lee, 14

School: River Hill High

Special achievement: He played trumpet in the All-State Band, which performed at the Baltimore Convention Center in February. He is also a member of the Howard County Youth Orchestra.

How does the All-State Band prepare for its performance? Students from around the state audition for a spot in the band. Once a year, those who made the band meet in Baltimore for three days. They rehearse for two full days and perform on the third day.

What types of music does he favor? He likes classical music best. In addition to trumpet, he plays classical guitar and writes music, which he records. He is trying to get together a group of friends to play together.

When did he start? "I started playing trumpet when I was in sixth grade. I loved being in band because in middle school I was really good."

How does being a musician help him in school? Other students want to befriend him because he is a musician, Michael says. "It has helped my knowing more people."
