Hispanic chamber will hold ceremony for GlobalTech grads

The Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will hold its fifth annual Maryland Hispanic Workforce Gala for students of GlobalTech Bilingual Institute who have successfully completed their program requirements at a commencement ceremony July 26 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at La Fontaine Bleu, 7514 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie. Participants join the programs offered by the chamber to improve their English language skills, and to develop better job skills to improve employment opportunities. In 1987, three students graduated from GlobalTech. This year, 83 will graduate. Tickets are $35 prepaid or $40 at the door. A $5 discount is available to members of the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and to students, graduates, alumni and family members of GlobalTech Bilingual Institute. Canadian electric company expands to Annapolis

TransAlta, Canada's largest nonregulated electric generation and marketing company, recently established trading and marketing operations in Annapolis in support of the company's North American growth strategy.

The company celebrated its arrival with a "Calgary Stampede" outdoor pancake breakfast in Annapolis on July 1.

BWI business group plans breakfast meeting

The BWI Business Partnership Inc. will hold a Success Executive Briefing and Breakfast Meeting featuring Paul J. Wiedefeld, executive director of the Maryland Aviation Administration, and Bob Montgomery, vice president of properties and facilities for Southwest Airlines, at 7:45 a.m. July 31 at the Holiday Inn, 890 Elkridge Landing Road, Linthicum.

Reservations are required. Cost is $25 for nonmembers.

Severn Bancorp given OK to be listed on Nasdaq

Severn Bancorp, the parent company of Severn Savings Bank and Hyatt Real Estate, has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission and Nasdaq Market Inc. to be publicly listed on the Nasdaq small-cap market under the symbol SVBI.

Also, the board of directors of Severn Bancorp declared a common stock dividend of 6 cents per share payable today to stockholders of record June 28, 2002.

Severn Savings Bank has branches in Annapolis and Glen Burnie and specializes in residential mortgage lending. Hyatt Real Estate in Annapolis provides commercial sales and leasing, property management and residential sales services.

RGII Technologies names new chief operating officer

RGII Technologies has announced that Jim Nehman, former director of business planning and development, has been named chief operating officer.

Nehman has devoted 30 years of his career to the government and has received several awards for his efforts, including the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award in 1989 and 1993. He was also recognized with the Secretary of the Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Medal in June 2000.

He assumed the duties of chief operating officer July 1 and will be working from RGII's corporate headquarters in Annapolis.

Vansant Creations wins honors at Clarion Awards

Annapolis-based Web multimedia development firm Vansant Creations recently won Best Interactive CD honors at the 2002 Clarion Awards.

Vansant's interactive training CD, produced for a Fortune 100 company, competed against entries from around the country. Past winners in this category have included CNN and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Vansant Creations was founded by Amy Vansant in 1997 and has worked with nearly 400 clients since. The firm specializes in interactive media development, maintenance and search engine optimization.

Computer classes: YWCA Career Services is offering basic computer classes. Topics include keyboarding, computer literacy/Windows 98, Microsoft Word, Excel, the Internet, Access and PowerPoint. Classes are offered monthly. Fees range from $20 to $60. YWCA membership is required. 410-626-7800.

Orientation seminars: The Junior Chamber of Commerce for Annapolis will present a series of new-member orientation seminars this month. Professionals between the ages of 21 and 39 are encouraged to attend. Orientations will be held at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow at O'Brien's; 7 p.m. July 25 at West Street library; and 7 p.m. July 30 at West Street library.
