Darrell M. Gaver, 62, computer security expert

Darrell M. Gaver, a retired computer security expert who worked for the Social Security Administration, died of colon cancer Wednesday at his home in Parkville. He was 62.

Born in Seaford, Del., and raised in Parkville, Mr. Gaver was a 1958 graduate of Parkville High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from University of Baltimore in 1964.

He began his accounting career at Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Linthicum in 1964. In 1966, he joined Exxon USA in Towson, where he worked as a computer programmer until 1979.

Mr. Gaver was a computer information security officer for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland from 1980 to 1993, when he joined AlliedSignal in a similar capacity.

Mr. Gaver went to work in 1996 as a computer security officer for the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn, where he was awarded the Associate Commissioner's Citation in 1999. He retired in 2000 on a medical disability.

His professional memberships included the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, EDP Auditors Association Inc. and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association.

Mr. Gaver was treasurer of Texas United Methodist Church, where he had been active in the youth group and had taught Sunday school.

He also was church charge treasurer for Frames United Methodist and Poplar Grove United Methodist.

He was active in Masonic affairs and was a member of Mount Moriah Masonic Lodge in Towson and the Scottish Rite.

He was a coin and stamp collector.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Texas United Methodist, York Road and Galloway Avenue in Cockeysville.

Mr. Gaver is survived by his wife of 33 years, the former Janet Lee Hennighausen; a daughter, Jennifer Lee Gaver of Parkville; and his mother, Delorace Hickey of Towson.
