Classic Chevrolet club to park in Damascus for annual festival

The Heart of Maryland Classic Chevy Club will hold its annual Celebrate Damascus event July 19 and 20 in Damascus, Montgomery County.

Activities begin with a parade at 7 p.m. July 19 from the Weis Market shopping center, down Route 27 to the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department grounds on Lewis Drive. Community groups, local businesses, tractors, fire engines, classic cars and bands will participate.

After the parade, a concert with the Rock & Roll Relics and other musicians will be held. The Fire Department will sell food.

A flea market and car and truck cruise-in and display for all makes of vehicles will be held July 20 at Damascus Chevrolet, 26100 Woodfield Road. Oldies music, raffles, games and food specials will be featured. A dance will be held that night from 8 to midnight with Big Cam & the Lifters. Tickets are $10 and advance purchase is recommended.

Mount Airy library plans story time and pizza event

Mount Airy branch library, 705 Ridge Ave., will offer:

"Year-round Story Time" for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 11 a.m. today, Ahoy Mateys!; and at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday, "Live and In Person - Winnie the Pooh."

"Live and In Person - Angelina Ballerina" for all ages (children age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday. Cameras are welcome.

"Mount Airy Pizza Hut Library Fund-raiser" from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Mount Airy Pizza Hut. Coupons are available at the library to help the facility earn 20 percent of net sales at Pizza Hut during the event. Froggy will visit from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"Cartooning Manga Style - Millennium Teens" for ages 11 to 17 at 2 p.m. Thursday. . Artist John Staton from Insight Studios will demonstrate tips and techniques for drawing in the Japanese style of manga.

"Bedtime Stories" for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

"Abu the Flutemaker" for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) at 1:30 p.m. July 24. Abu will demonstrate and play instruments such as the bedpostaphone and thunder drums. Tickets are required and may be picked up one week in advance.

Mount Airy pupil wins awards for photo, video

Jill Kile, a fourth-grade pupil at Mount Airy Elementary School, won several awards for her photographs and video in the 2001-2002 school year Maryland Media Festival.

She created an instructional video, "Jill's Cooking Show." Jill and a friend, Jessica Valentic, made and tasted chocolate chip cookies.

She also took a photograph of a sunrise.
