Veterans outreach scheduled for visit to Legion Post 120

The Veterans Outreach Program from Martinsburg, W.Va., will be at American Legion Post 120 in Taneytown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Veterans who have not signed up for Department of Veterans Affairs medical care or have questions about VA medical care are welcome to visit the outreach program.

Free blood pressure checks will be given.

The post is at 9 Broad St.

New Windsor church holding crab cake sale

St. Paul's United Methodist Church of New Windsor will hold its annual crab cake sale July 19.

Crab cakes with rolls and tartar sauce cost $4 and may be purchased cooked or uncooked.

Pickup times are 11 a.m. to noon for cooked crab cakes and 10 a.m. to noon for uncooked. Orders can be picked up in the church social hall, High Street entrance.

Deadline for orders is Sunday.

The church is at 200 Main St.

Blood drive scheduled July 18 by Valley Lions

Valley Lions Club of Pleasant Valley will hold its summer community blood drive from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 18 at the Pleasant Valley fire hall.

Appointments are recommended by calling 410-848-3163, but walk-ins are welcome.

The fire hall is at 2030 S. Pleasant Valley Road.

New Windsor mayor talks about history of the town

New Windsor Mayor Sam Pierce spoke recently to Sulphur Springs Lions Club.

The mayor talked about the town's past, present and future.

Afterward, First Vice President LaRue Sipes presented the mayor with a token of appreciation.

The club meets the second and fourth Mondays of the month at St. Luke's Church.

Taneytown library branch announces July programs

The Taneytown library branch, 10 Grand Drive, will offer several programs this month.

They include:

"Wizardry 101 - The Magic of Books" for all ages at 7 p.m. today. Mervyn J. Mugwump (aka Jonathan Brack, magician) will demonstrate and reveal magic tricks that children can do themselves. The program was inspired by the Harry Potter series. Tickets are required and may be picked up before the program.

"Peter Rabbit's Great Adventure Puppet Show" for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. today. Children can follow Peter as he explores Farmer McGregor's garden.

"Live and In Person - Winnie the Pooh" for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. Cameras are welcome.

Drop-in Crafts for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) from 10 a.m. to noon, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. "Spot" from the books by Eric Hill will visit.

"Scales and Tall Tales" for ages 4 to 10 at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. A naturalist from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Forest and Park Service will tell tales, Native American folklore and stories with live animals.

"Year-round Family Story Time" for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Picnic Fun; and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Picnic Fun.

"Taneytown Pizza Hut Library Fund-raiser" from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Taneytown Pizza Hut. The library can earn 20 percent of net sales that evening. Coupons are available from the library. Maisy the Mouse will visit from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"Abu the Flutemaker" for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) at 1:30 p.m. July 23. Abu will demonstrate and play instruments such as the bedpostaphone and thunder drums. Tickets are required and may be picked up a week in advance.

Key High School graduate finishes Naval Academy

Christopher A. Forman graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

Forman completed four years of academic, military and physical fitness training to graduate with a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering.

He is the son of Carol and Harry Forman of Taneytown and a 1998 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School.
