July 10, 2002

The student: Andy Davis, 15

School: River Hill High

Special achievement: Andy earned a spot as a trombone player in the All-State Band. He is also a Boy Scout and has completed his Eagle project.

Why trombone? "I started playing trombone in fourth grade. I like the way it sounds. I think it has a nice tone quality. I like the idea that you have a slide to move around." He also plays guitar and has tried other brass instruments.

What kinds of music does he like? Andy listens to rock, alternative and classical music. On guitar, he plays pop music by bands such as Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He practices trombone 30 to 45 minutes every day.

What is the best part of being in the All-State Band? "I met some new people through band that I didn't know before through school and at All-State" tryouts.
