Library offering orientation for child care providers

The Howard County Library will offer an orientation for child care providers on its Visiting Storyteller Service and other library resources from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 22 at the central library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, and July 30 at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.

Registration is required.

Cooksville-Harriet Tubman Class of 1952 plans reunion

The Cooksville-Harriet Tubman High School Alumni Association will hold its Class of 1952 50th reunion this month.

A fellowship banquet will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. July 18 at Long Reach High School, 6101 Old Dobbin Lane, Columbia. The cost is $20. Honorary diplomas from Harriet Tubman High School will be available for those who did not graduate. Those who choose to do so will be inducted into the Class of 1952.

Reunion activities will begin with visits to sick and needy alumni Tuesday. A community picnic for families will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 20 at Harriet Tubman High School, using a portion of neighboring Atholton High School grounds. Food, provided by a caterer, will be available.

A historical display is planned, with antique automobiles, household items and other objects spanning 1939 to 1965. The county's first black high school, Cooksville, opened in 1939. Integration closed Harriet Tubman High in 1965.

A worship service to honor the history of Cooksville High School will be held at 4 p.m. July 21 at Mount Gregory United Methodist Church, near the former site of the school.

Bay Trust grant forms are due by 5 p.m. July 19

Chesapeake Bay Trust grants of up to $25,000 are available to schools, civic groups and community associations for projects that contribute to the revitalization of the bay.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. July 19. Award decisions will be made in early September. The next deadline to submit grant applications is Sept. 20, with notification in late November.
