County police investigating 2 unrelated robberies

Anne Arundel County police are investigating two unrelated robberies that occurred Friday afternoon.

In the first incident, police said, a man entered Days of Olde antique store in the 700 block of Crain Highway in Gambrills about 1:40 p.m. and forced a female employee to sit on the floor in the back of the store.

He then pried open the cash register and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. The robber is described as black man, 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds, with a shaved head.

In the second incident, police said, a driver who had pulled over near Morgan Road and Duckens Street in Odenton to make a call on his cellular phone was robbed at gunpoint about 3:30 p.m.

The victim told police that a man approached the driver's window and asked the time. About a minute later, the man returned to the car with a black handgun and demanded the victim's wallet. Police said that the victim handed over $80 in cash from his front shirt pocket, then the suspect hit him on the head with the butt of the gun and fled.

The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical technicians.

Police arrest 8 people at sobriety checkpoint

Eight people were arrested at a sobriety checkpoint in Severna Park on Friday night, police said.

Police stopped 1,805 cars between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Ritchie Highway between Cypress Creek and Jones Station roads. The checkpoint was a joint operation of the Anne Arundel County Police Department and the Glen Burnie barracks of the Maryland State Police.

County police charged five drivers with driving under the influence. State police made three arrests.
