Woman dies after being hit by trooper's patrol car

MECHANICSVILLE - A Southern Maryland woman was killed early yesterday when she was struck by a state police patrol car while attempting to run across Route 5 in Mechanicsville in St. Mary's County, state police said.

Police said Kimberly S. Tucker, 35, of Mechanicsville had been drinking while off-duty at Hills Club Bar & Restaurant, where she was the kitchen manager, and had given her car keys to a fellow employee about 2:30 a.m. when she spotted another co-worker in her car at a gas station near the club.

Police said Tucker ran into the path of Tfc. Donald W. Hill Jr.'s patrol car and was pronounced dead at the scene. Hill, a five-year-veteran of the force, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Prince George's Hospital Center's shock trauma unit and released. He was placed on administrative leave pending a review of the accident.

HAVRE DE GRACE - One motorist was killed and another was injured yesterday when their vehicles collided on Route 155 near Havre de Grace, state police at the Bel Air barracks reported.

Police said Joaquin Garcia was driving a 1994 Honda Accord east on the shoulder of the road near Barker Lane about 1 p.m. when he attempted to make a U-turn without granting the right-of-way to oncoming vehicles and collided with an eastbound 1991 Ford pickup truck driven by Alan Gentry. The impact drove the Honda down an embankment.

Police said that Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene and that Gentry was treated at Harford Memorial Hospital for neck and back injuries. The accident is under investigation, police said.
