A 2-year-old boy who fell into a family member's pool in Columbia late Saturday died over the weekend at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Howard County police said.

Carolyn and Peter Kotz, the child's parents, called 911 and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Andrew until paramedics arrived, police said.

The Kotzes live in the 5400 block of Wooded Way in Harper's Choice but were visiting family members in the 11000 block of Barrow Downs when the accident occurred, said police Pfc. Denise Walk.

It appeared the families had several children at the house and were trying to get them to settle down about 6:30 p.m. when Andrew wandered off, Walk said. Family members found him several minutes later, police said.

Everyone else was in the house, and no one was swimming at the time of the accident, Walk said.

Paramedics took Andrew to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday. He died Sunday afternoon, police said.

Police said they are investigating the incident, but the drowning appears to have been accidental.

A determination of the exact cause of death was delayed pending the state medical examiner's report.
