A 17-year-old Columbia girl was raped and stabbed early yesterday in the 5600 block of Columbia Road, Howard County police said.

A K-9 police officer apprehended a suspect as he was sexually assaulting the woman, said police spokeswoman Pfc. Denise Walk.

The officer released his dog when he saw the assault in progress, Walk said.

Malcom William Scott, 27, of no fixed address was treated at Howard County General Hospital for a dog bite before being arrested on five charges, including attempted first-degree murder and first-degree rape, police said.

He was being held without bail, pending a bail-review hearing scheduled for this morning.

The woman was treated for facial injuries and nonlife-threatening stab wounds to the chest at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said. She was listed in serious but stable condition yesterday afternoon, police said.

The Sun does not identify sexual assault victims.

Officers had been dispatched about 4:30 a.m. to the Greenbriar Apartments area on Columbia Road for reports of a woman screaming, police said.

Police said Scott and the teen-ager met Monday as they helped a woman move into an apartment. The 17-year-old is a friend of the woman, and Scott is a friend of her boyfriend, who also helped with the move, Walk said.

Police said a man followed the 17-year-old to her car after she left the apartment early yesterday.

At the vehicle, the man pulled out a knife, started beating her, stabbed her in the chest and dragged her to a grassy area near the woods, police said.

There, he began sexually assaulting her and continued to beat her, police said. The girl's screams drew the attention of neighbors, who called police, Walk said.

Scott also is also charged with attempted second-degree murder and first- and second-degree assault, police said.
