Jagged concrete flattened tires on four or five cars yesterday about 3:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, near Route 175, state police said.
Sgt. Archie Powers of the Waterloo Barracks said the Maryland State Highway Administration has been doing nightly repair work on a stretch of I-95, during which crews take up large chunks of roadway to pour in fresh concrete.
"Some of the concrete came loose and got into the fast lane," Powers said. "The cars ran over it, and it popped the tires."
Police said the lane was cordoned off and cleaned up by 5 p.m. Powers said the incident slowed traffic but caused no serious delays.
No injuries or damage to anything but the tires was reported, and Powers said he did not know who might be responsible for compensating the motorists.
No one from the Maryland State Highway Administration could be reached late yesterday for comment.
