American Legion Hesson-Snider Post 120 of Taneytown will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the old gun club park.
People with old, tattered flags can have them disposed of properly by the American Legion.

St. Luke's Lutheran sets benefit yard sale Saturday
St. Luke's (Winter's) Lutheran Church youth will hold a yard sale from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church near New Windsor.
A variety of items will be offered. Proceeds will benefit the youth trip to the Global Mission event in Hickory, N.C.

Linwood Brethren Church plans Strawberry Festival
Linwood Brethren Church will hold its 30th annual Strawberry Festival from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday on the church grounds.
Strawberries, strawberry pies, shortcakes, milkshakes and berries and ice cream will be featured. Lunch food, including barbecue, chicken and ham salad, hot dogs and chili dogs, will be sold.
The event will include music, cakewalks, a bake table, crafts, children's games and wagon and pony rides.

Harney Fire Company begins carnival Monday
Harney Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual carnival Monday through June 22 on the carnival grounds next to the firehouse.
Games, rides and food booths will open at 7 p.m. daily. Platters will be served in the fire hall from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through June 20 and until 10 p.m. June 21 and 22.
Discounted ride nights will be held from 7 to 10:30 Monday and Tuesday. A money give-away will be held June 22 with $3,000 in cash prizes.
Musical entertainment will include: Monday, Bootleg; Tuesday, Ashley Marie & Silver Run; Wednesday, Jump Start; June 20, Dixie Hiway; June 21, Borderline; June 22, Roll the Dice.

Vacation Bible School at Pipe Creek church
St. Luke's (Winter's) Lutheran Church and Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren will hold a joint Vacation Bible School from June 24 to 28 at the Pipe Creek church.
The theme will be Son Canyon River Adventure and will be held from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.

Taneytown library offers puppets, games, canines
The Taneytown library branch, 10 Grand Drive, will offer:
"Saturday Special - Race to Read Story Time" for all ages (children age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 10 a.m. Saturday. Stories, songs and activities about "things that go" will be featured.
Year-round Family Story Time for all ages (age 3 and younger with an adult) at 11 a.m. Tuesday, and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with the topic "In the Good Old Summertime."
"Peter Rabbit's Great Adventure Puppet Show" for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday. . Children can follow Peter Rabbit as he explores Mr. McGregor's garden.
"Game Night" for ages 11 to 17 at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Youths will learn the ancient game of mancala and play for prizes.
"The Magic of Roger Lindsay" for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Illusions, magic and Prop, the magic bunny, will be featured. Tickets are required and may be picked up one week before the performance.
Police dog demonstration for ages 5 and older at 1:30 p.m. June 20. A local police officer will show how he and his canine companion work together to solve crime.

Uniontown boy wins youth casting competition
Robert Beall, 7, of Uniontown recently won the Governor's Youth Fishing Derby casting competition.
He cast his line to within 22 inches of a target inside a rectangular box. The competition was open to children ages 9 and younger. Robert won against nearly 20 others in the annual competition held June 1 at Piney Run Park.
