Value City of Glen Burnie, the American Cancer Society and Phi Beta Sigma will sponsor a Cancer Awareness Day observance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Cancer Awareness Day event is part of the American Cancer Society's collaboration with the fraternity's national project, Sigma's Waging War Against Cancer.
The event is open to the public. Value City is at 7700 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie.

People
Honored: Donald Smith of Glen Burnie was honored by the Maryland Transportation Authority for his outstanding job performance last year. Smith, a 21-year veteran of MdTA, is a facility maintenance supervisor at Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. He was nominated for the award by fellow employees.
Military
Completes basic: Airman Tyrone J. Nutter Jr., son of Deborah Odum of Glen Burnie, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Nutter is a 2001 graduate of Glen Burnie High School.
Reports for duty: Cpl. Steve A. Fountain Jr., son of Cherylene L. Fountain of Glen Burnie, recently reported for duty with the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Fountain is a 1999 graduate of North County High School. He joined the Marine Corps in July 1999.

Summer concerts: The 2002 Glen Burnie Summer Concert series continues at the Arundel Center North Glen Burnie Town Center Pavilion. The free concerts are from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday evenings. This week, Striker will play classic rock and oldies. On June 21, the Continentals will perform ballroom, swing and Latin tunes.
