Athletics update

After losing two of three to the Orioles last week, Oakland swept three games from Tampa Bay over the weekend, outscoring the Devil Rays 22-8. The A's had spent two weeks in last place before finally climbing out of the American League West cellar on Sunday. Hiljus is 0-2 with a 9.69 ERA in his past three starts. The key has been getting to him early, as he has allowed 25 of his 31 runs this season in the first three innings and has a 2.79 ERA from the fourth inning on. He received a no-decision against the Orioles on Wednesday in Oakland, when he allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings. The A's won that game 7-6, and the Orioles were that close to posting a sweep. Mulder went 21-8 last season and finished runner-up to Roger Clemens in the Cy Young Award voting, but his velocity was way down again Thursday, and the Orioles cruised to an 11-3 victory. - (Athletics statistics, 6C)
