Izudin Mehmedovic concluded an impressive career by winning his third and fourth gold medals at the 55th annual state track and field meet at UMBC yesterday.

Mehmedovic helped Oakland Mills win its third straight Class 1A title, fourth in the past five seasons and 11th overall.

Eight of those titles have come under coach Sam Singleton, who won his first championship in 1993 and will take his coaching talents to Howard County's new Reservoir High, scheduled to open in September.

Oakland Mills defeated runner-up Loch Raven, 116-54.

"It's been a good run," Singleton said. "I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'll miss the team. We still have a good bunch of kids returning. Our kids did what they were supposed to do today, except for the 300 hurdles."

Mehmedovic, who won the 3,200 meters and anchored the first-place 3,200 relay team Thursday, yesterday won the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 23 seconds and the 800 in 1:57.15.

The 800 was his last event and he was challenged strongly at the top of the stretch on the final lap. But he fought off the challenge and pulled away.

"I couldn't give it up," Mehmedovic said. "My calves were sore today from running the 3,200 and 1,600 up on my toes, but I would do anything to get that fourth gold medal. Winning four gold medals was my dream for three years."

"Izzy was probably the best all-time distance runner ever at Oakland Mills," Singleton said. "He ran hurt the majority of this year, but held us together both indoor and outdoor. He won three golds and one silver indoor, and a state cross country title, so he had a big year."

Two Oakland Mills runners fell in the 300 hurdles. One of them, J.D. Fennell, said: "All that matters is that we won this for Coach [Singleton]. We had a lot of injuries this season, but everyone still ran."

Smithsburg won the girls 1A state title over runner-up Poolesville, 104-91.

Stephanie Dickerson of first-year Century High in Carroll County finished second in the 100 meters (12.93) behind Melissa Wynn of South Hagerstown (12.85). Century finished sixth with 34 points.
