John M. Appleton Jr., 76, letter carrier, sportsman

John Michael Appleton Jr., a retired letter carrier and avid outdoorsman, died Monday of heart failure at North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie. He was 76.

Mr. Appleton, a Pasadena native, attended Glen Burnie High School. During World War II, he served with the Marine Corps in the Pacific. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of corporal.

Mr. Appleton joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1957 as a letter carrier and walked a route in Pasadena. He later transferred to rural delivery. He retired in 1986.

He was a member of the Severna Parks Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Boumi Temple and American Legion Post No. 175 in Severna Park.

Mr. Appleton enjoyed ocean and bay fishing and deer hunting.

His wife, the former Lillian Listman, died in 1974.

He is survived by a son, John M. Appleton III of Pasadena; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.
