Stephen E. Asendorf, 81, mechanical engineer

Stephen E. Asendorf, a retired engineer active in Lutheran circles, died Sunday of liver cancer at Augsburg Lutheran Home in Lochearn. He was 81 and lived in Ellicott City.

He had been a mechanical engineer at the Linthicum plant of Westinghouse Electric Corp. for 32 years when he retired in 1986.

Born and raised in Baltimore, he was a 1938 graduate of City College. He received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1952, and later a master's degree there.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946.

A board member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod's Southeastern District Council, he belonged to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Irvington for more than 60 years before becoming a charter member of Trinity Church in Howard County.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church, 3604 Chatham Road, Ellicott City.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Mary Wiskow; two sons, S. Eric Asendorf of Falmouth, Mass., and Robert Asendorf of Edmonds, Wash.; a daughter, Barbara A. Holloway of Galisteo, N.M.; and five grandchildren.
