George Hummel Jr., 81, county health official

George Hummel Jr., a retired Baltimore County Health Department official, died Saturday of heart failure at St. Joseph Medical Center. The Cockeysville resident was 81.

He retired in 1986 as director of environmental services for the county agency, and earlier worked for the state health department.

Born and raised in Northwest Baltimore, he was a 1940 graduate of Forest Park High School. He earned a degree in agriculture from the University of Maryland, College Park.

During World War II, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and was a radio operator aboard a cutter on convoy duty.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Margaret McCusker; a son, George J. Hummel of Cockeysville; a daughter, Laurel Hummel-Bauch of New Windsor; a brother, John T. Hummel of Reisterstown; and five grandchildren.

A Mass was offered Wednesday at the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier in Hunt Valley, where he was a member.
