May 23, 2002

Marie A. Smith, a retired school secretary who was co-owner and former office manager of a building supply business, died Saturday of pulmonary fibrosis at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The Galesville resident was 72.

Mrs. Smith retired last year from Smith Building Supplies Inc., a Churchton business that she helped her husband establish in the 1960s.

Marie A. Murphy was born in Baltimore and raised in the Hamilton neighborhood. She was a 1947 graduate of Eastern High School and attended McCoy College -- the old evening school of the Johns Hopkins University.

In 1949, she married John E. Smith Jr. The couple owned and operated Smith's Grocery Store in Galesville from 1960 to 1967. She also worked as a secretary at Galesville Elementary School from 1967 until retiring last year.

She had volunteered with the Brownies and Girl Scouts and was a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Shady Side. She was an avid Orioles fan and enjoyed knitting.

She was a member of Galesville United Methodist Church, where services were held Tuesday.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, John E. Smith III, and a daughter, Susan S. Cosden, both of Shady Side; a sister, Anne M. Wilson of St. Augustine, Fla.; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
